LED lights will cut bills by 75 per cent

Low-cost LED lights will slash lighting bills in homes by 75 per cent within five years. The lights, which burn for 100,000 hours, will last 10 times longer than today's low energy lightbulbs but can be made at a tenth of the cost. They will use just a third of the power of low-energy bulbs and cut UK energy use from lights from 20 to five per cent, or eight power stations.

Throughout war, disaster and recession, it has kept Britain illuminated for more than 120 years. But the traditional incandescent lightbulb is finally being switched off for the last time. Retailers have stopped replenishing stocks of conventional 100watt bulbs and will have run out within weeks. The voluntary withdrawal – part of a Government campaign to force people into buying low-energy fluorescent bulbs – follows the scrapping of the 150w bulb last year.

Energy-saving light bulbs blamed for migraines

The energy-saving light bulbs that will be made compulsory in homes in a few years can trigger migraines, campaigners have claimed. The Migraine Action Association (MAA) said some of its members alleged the fluorescent bulbs had led to attacks of the powerful headaches. By 2011, Britain will be the first European country to phase out traditional bulbs as part of a strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
